Council Should Reject Woodbrook Housing Development
Published: 31 January, 2008
Sinn Féin Dún Laoghaire representative Eoin Ó Broin has called on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council to reject the proposed development of 537 apartments and town houses at Woodbrook, Shankill.
Speaking today Mr Ó Broin said:
"Sinn Féin is not opposed to housing developments. Indeed we have been to the forefront of demands for more social and affordable housing for the people of Dún Laoghaire.
"However the proposed development of 537 apartments and town houses at Woodbrook, Shankill includes a number of major problems. Taken together these problems are sufficient for the Council to reject the proposal as it currently stands.
"At present the infrastructure in the Woodbrook area could not support such a large development. The present road system would need significant alteration to cope with any increase in traffic. In addition, while a Dart station for Woodbrook is promised, no date has been set, leaving the area with inadequate public transport provision.
"There is also a lack of local amenities such as shops and schools which could service such a large increase in the local population.
"It is also unclear whether the type of dwellings being proposed are designed to meet the needs of the local community rather than generate large profits for local developers. The people of Dún Laoghaire urgently need more social and affordable accommodation, including family homes. They do not need more high-end apartments and expensive town houses.
"Sinn Féin also concerned that the proposed development has not been designed in such a way as to minimise its impact on the local environment.
"Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council should not accept the proposed development as it currently stands."
