Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment Cllr. Daithí Doolan, was today elected Chair of Sinn Féin's National Elected Representatives Forum, which is responsible for the co-ordination of Councillors across Ireland.

Addressing the National Elected Representatives Forum AGM in Dublin, Cllr. Doolan outlined:

"I am delighted and honoured to be elected chairperson today. It comes at a time when Sinn Féin faces both challenges and possibilities right across this island. The key issue for the the party's elected representatives is to position ourselves as the main opposition to the conservative cartel that operates as politics in the corridors of power across this island. We must be the elected voice of change. A priority for me will be co-ordinate and roll out our response to the threat of climate change & global warming. Sinn Féin Councillors in Dublin have been to the fore in piloting a Climate Change Strategy for the city of Dublin. We must now ensure it is adopted as policy in every local authority on the island.

We will also be playing a key role in the forthcoming Lisbon referendum. Sinn Féin, and in particular our elected representatives, will be part of a national campaign working to secure a no vote in the referendum. The Lisbon Treaty will only further erode democracy and accountability in the EU. More power will be taken from our elected representatives here in Ireland and put into the hands of bureaucrats in Brussels."

Cllr. Doolan concluded by saying that, "both the local government and the EU elections next year will give Sinn Féin the opportunity to build on the successes of 2004."
