Irish businesses right to be worried about Lisbon Treaty - McDonald

Speaking at a meeting of the Oireachtas European Affairs Committee in Leinster House this morning which was also attended Chambers Ireland and the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association, Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald said Irish businesses are right to be worried about the implications of the Lisbon Treaty if it is ratified.

Ms. McDonald said, "The Lisbon Treaty, if ratified would have huge
implications for business in Ireland. The European Commission has made
no secret of its desire to control matters in relation to corporation
tax. The weakening of our influence as a result of the Lisbon Treaty
would make it even more difficult for the government to resist such
measures.

"While proponents of the Treaty claim that Ireland's veto will block
measures from the EU to control our corporation tax policy, the European
Commission has claimed that if Ireland blocks its measures they will
simply take a back door option. Therefore Irish businesses are right to
be worried about the implications of the Lisbon Treaty."
