Ó Snodaigh welcomes heroin seizure in Dublin

Published: 16 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has congratulated Gardaí on the seizure of €6.5million worth of heroin in Dublin today and again called on the Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan to double the resources for Garda Drug Squads in an effort to tackle serious drug and gun crime.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said today, "I want to congratulate the Gardaí
involved in today's operation which resulted in a huge amount of heroin
being taken off the streets. Hopefully this seizure will now lead to
one of Ireland's major drug dealers being put away for a long time.

"While today's seizure is welcome it is clear that vast amounts of drugs
are still entering the country. This in turn is leading to serious
crime with dealers involved in serious gun crime, murders and stabbings
while addicts take part in muggings, burglaries and robberies in order
to feed their habit.

"If the Gardaí are to have any chance at successfully tackling crime in
Ireland then it is essential that we get to grips with the drugs crisis.
It is for this reason that Sinn Féin has called on the Minister for
Justice Brian Lenihan to double the resources for the Garda Drug Squads.

"We welcome the new prioritisation given to tackling drugs in the
policing plan for 2008. Sinn Féin had argued for this in our submission
to the plan. However, if the Minister is serious about tackling crime
then he must follow this up with adequate resources and I am again
calling on him to double the resources for the Garda Drug Squads."
