Council wastes €19m on incineration promotion-Doolan

Sinn Féin's Dublin Environment Spokesperson, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has slammed, "City Council officials for wasting €19m of public money on promoting the Poolbeg incinerator."

Speaking this morning, Cllr. Doolan said:

"It has only come to light following a question I put to the City Manager at last night's Council meeting that City Council officials have spent over €19m of tax payers money on promoting an incinerator for the Poolbeg Peninsula.

What is even more shocking is that when I asked the same question in March 2006 the Management had to admit to spending €100,000, so in less than 2 years over €18m has been lavished on private consultants. But despite all their money and glossy brochures the truth is that the City Councillors & the public continue to oppose this incinerator.

The €19m has paid for newsletters, newspaper advertising, posters, information sessions and the An Bord Pleannala hearing. The fact is the proposed Poolbeg incinerator is unwanted and unviable. No amount of gloss or money can deny that fact."

Cllr. Doolan explains:

"This money should be redirected into funding a real waste management strategy that aims to reduce, reuse & recycle our waste. The Manager is behaving like a gambler blowing money in the last chance saloon. But unfortunately it's the public's money is being wasted.

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded:

"That the City Manager to put a halt to this multi million euro madness."
