Mounttown Flats Demolished - Victory of Local Community
Published: 16 November, 2007
On Thursday November 25th Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council commenced demolition of the Mounttown Flats, Fitzgerald Park, Monkstown. The move follows a concerted community campaign to have the flats taken down. Sinn Féin Dun Laoghaire representative Eoin Ó Broin has described the development "as a victory of the local community".
Speaking today Mr Ó Broin said:
"This weeks development is a real victory for the local community. For several years local people have been working hard to secure the demolition of the Mounttown Flats. For much of that time Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council appeared to be ignoring the very real concerns of the community.
"I welcome this weeks developments and hope that all the existing flat blocks will be demolished and that the Council will ensure that the site is left clean and safe.
"I am calling on the council to engage with the local community as soon as possible to discuss their development plans for the area. It is vital that local people are consulted and that their needs and views are taken into account before any decision is taken with respect to the use of the land at Fitzgerald Park.
"However serious questions remain regarding the Council's handling of this issue. We have yet to hear from the Director of Housing Kathleen Holohan on the issue of asbestos in the blocks and why it took the council almost three years to begin demolition.'
