Responding to an announcement from the Garda Commissioner that he is to establish a full time specialist unit to deal with gang crime Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said multiple well resourced and dedicated drugs units at local levels are needed in addition to a specialised unit to tackle gang crime. Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD called for additional resources to be pumped into drug awareness and education initiatives, treatment services and rehabilitation opportunities. Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus ÓSnodaigh TD has welcomed the long-awaited publication of the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill 2008. However, Deputy Ó Snodaigh said that unless the Bill reverses the substantial amount of damage contained in the 2007 Bill then this will be a wasted opportunity to comprehensively reform outdated and inadequate legislation. Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has congratulated Gardaí on the weekend drugs seizures but warned that the increasing seizures of drugs are a reflection of the increased amount of drugs entering the state. Responding to news that the Jacobs Fruitfield factory in Tallaght is to close with the loss of 220 jobs Sinn Féin representative Seán Crowe said this will be a huge blow to the local area and rejected company's excuse tha outdated equipment is making the facility uncompetitive claiming that the money from the sale of the Jacobs site at Whitestown Industrial Estate was to go towards maintaining both the jobs and the facilities at Tallaght. Sinn Féin Councillor Larry O'Toole has described as "scandalous and shameful" the revelation in a report issued by the Irish Psychiatric Association today (24 January) that the site earmarked for a long-promised psychiatric unit at Beaumont Hospital has now been allocated for a private for-profit hospital under the Government's infamous 'co-location' scheme. Former Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe speaking last night at a packed meeting of party supporters in Killinardan, Tallaght said he is "determined to run for the local elections in 2009". He said he was looking forward to the new challenge and was confident, despite the recent set back, that the party would increase its representation on South Dublin County Council. SINN FÉIN in Dublin West have selected local man Paul Donnelly to take over as the party's representative for the area on Fingal County Council. Mr. Donnelly was unanimously backed by local party members at a selection convention that was chaired by Dublin MEP and Sinn Féin Chairperson Mary Lou McDonald last Thursday evening, 10th January in Huntstown Community Centre. The party's ruling Ard Chomhairle also approved the selection at their monthly meeting held in Dublin on Saturday 12th January. Mr. Donnelly will now seek co-option to Fingal County Council at their monthly meeting on Monday 11th February. Read full article

Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald speaking in Strasbourg this afternoon said that contrary to what MEP Brian Crowley is suggesting proposals in the Lisbon Treaty would result in a loss of power for Ireland. She said is it laughable for Fianna Fáil to suggest that the loss of an automatic seat on the Commission somehow represents a new era for equality.
