BLANCHARDSTOWN Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher has called on Fingal County Council to stop delays in processing the application for funding for the proposed Blanchardstown Women's Refuge. Council architects have requested that substantial changes are made to the project, months after the design, planning and tender process was complete which is now putting the project in jeopardy. Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has accused Education Minister Mary Hanafin of being totally disingenuous in relation to her approach to Gaelscoileanna. He said 'the fact is that all of the evidence suggests that the total immersion approach used for younger pupils in Gaelscoileanna has been very successful.' He said 'It is the government which has taken an a la carte approach to Irish language education and this is what needs to be urgently addressed.' Read full article

Dublin Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has this morning called on the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to introduce a one-off payment for social welfare recipients qualifying for fuel allowance to cover additional fuel costs incurred due un-seasonal weather conditions throughout June and July. Dublin Mid West Sinn Féin will picket Mary Harney's office in Clondalkin tomorrow, Saturday 21 July at 12pm. Sinn Féin representative for the area Joanne Spain said the picket was to highlight the continued inefficiencies in the health service and the anger Irish people feel at Mary Harney being returned to the role of Health Minister. Ms Spain added that the Sinn Féin members will join the Mastaction picket to highlight the dangers of mobile phone masts and ESB pylons in North Clondalkin, scheduled to take place at 1pm. At today's meeting of the Dublin South Central Joint Policing Committee (JPC) Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD will call for more community involvement in dealing with social problems. Deputy Ó Snodaigh will call on the JPC to host public meetings in the area to discuss the problem of alcohol abuse and its implications for communities, anti-social behaviour and issues related to poor estate management. The recent Garda drugs raids and arrests in the Dublin North East area, codenamed Operation Accessory, have been welcomed by Councillor Larry O'Toole. The raids occurred in Darndale, Edenmore, Belcamp, Baldoyle and Kilbarrack and resulted in the seizure of drugs and related equipment to the value of hundreds of thousands of Euros. Read full article

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has strongly refuted the new Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan's claim that An Garda Síochána could not be placed in the hands of an independent authority because of its role in the State's security. Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "Not only is it possible because all members of a policing board could be bound by the Official Secrets Acts but it is also obligatory under the equivalence and security provisions of the Good Friday Agreement." Speaking today at a rally to save and upgrade St. Michael's Hospital in Dún Laoghaire, South Dublin Sinn Féin representative Shaun Tracey said Sinn Féin is committed to supporting the staff and patients of St Michaels in ensuring that Dún Laoghaire retains the hospital and called for the return of 24 hour accident and emergency services. Speaking today in support of a Shell to Sea organised protest in solidarity with the three Erris fishermen who were this week sentenced to three months in prison for allegedly assaulting a Garda, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh slammed the State authorities and An Garda Síochána for their "concerted campaign of intimidation and assault against a local community and peaceful demonstrators". Dublin 15 Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher is angered at his continued exclusion from the Fingal Joint Policing Committee and particularly the duplicitous role of the Labour Party. Sinn Féin is the only party in Fingal not represented on the committee, but this could have been resolved due to the occurrence of two vacancies. Read full article

At a discussion on the forthcoming EU Inter Governmental Conference (IGC) during a meeting of the European parliamentary group of which Sinn Féin is a member (GUE/NGL), Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald commented that "At this stage the Reform Treaty appears to be a hasty attempt by the European elite to complete the EU Constitution project." The IGC will begin the process of negotiating the repackaged EU Constitution now renamed the Reform Treaty on 23 July. Read full article

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh has said there should be a significant role for communities in the determination of alcohol licensing regulations. Deputy Ó Snodaigh has made a detailed submission to the Joint Policing Committee (JPC) Sub Group on Alcohol which meets today. In the submission Sinn Féin outlines its proposals for the liberalisation of licensing laws towards European models involving flexible opening and closing times to prevent drink-related disorder. Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has said the shooting in Stillorgan yesterday, which is reported to be part of the ongoing Crumlin/Drimnagh feud, highlights the need for extra Garda resources to be put into ending this feud. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said he discussed this feud with the Assistant Garda Commissioner this week however he could not get a commitment from him to establish a special Garda Task force with the specific aim of bringing this feud to an end. Councillor Larry O'Toole has called on the new Minister with responsibility for Drugs Policy, Pat Carey, to restore spending budgets removed in the last Budget. Councillor Larry O'Toole has condemned as 'insensitive, ignorant and offensive' the remarks by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern at an Irish Congress of Trades Unions conference today. The Taoiseach stated that he couldn't understand why certain people who were always 'cribbing and moaning' didn't commit suicide. The comments have also been condemned by a range of people and organisations working to combat suicide and to generate an understanding of the issue. Read full article

In light of yesterday's massive cocaine find in the sea off West Cork, reported to be worth at least €100 million, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said the scale of the seizure is indicative of the market for the drug in Ireland and called on the Government "use every resource available to underpin and implement all five pillars of the national drugs strategy". Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD will this evening ask the Assistant Garda Commissioner to establish a special Garda Task Force to tackle the escalating feud between Crumlin and Drimnagh criminal gangs. The feud between these gangs resulted in a grenade attack on a house in Crumlin last week.
